L’OEIL DE DIEU (The Eye of God)
Size: 50 x 60 cm
Location: Cannes (France)
Technique: Acrylic fluid painting on canvas
The eye of God is the nickname given to Helix nebula, a giant eye-shaped planetary nebula that is among the brightest and closest to Earth. Since its discovery in the early 19th century, Helix nebula has never stopped fascinating researchers but also humans’ collective sub-consciousness.
Archaeological and sociological researches have demonstrated that humankind across cultures, geographies and time, have always developed a deep bond with "universal archetypes" such as swirls. Swirls are used in all cultures through the ages, usually connected with life, infinity, birth, and femininity.
Humans are pre-programed to believe in something larger than themselves evidenced by these universally-shared symbols that exist in our collective sub-consciousness.
Like a giant eye in the sky, the telescopic representation of Helix nebula is one of those symbols, connecting humans’ collective sub-consciousness to the space.
This concept of connexion between human and cosmos is what the artist wanted to capture through this painting.
